Bexar County voters voted nearly 2-to-1 for the first countywide road bonds. Fewer than 4 percent of the county's registered voters turned out.
The Ixtoc I oil platform in the Bay of Campeche, 600 miles south of Texas in the Gulf of Mexico, blows out, catches fire and collapes. The well, 164 feet below the surface, spilled 10,000 to 30,000 barrels of oil per day into the gulf until it was finally capped on March 23, 1980.
