June 23 in San Antonio history...

1909
While tearing down an old soft rock structure on South Alamo between Garden and South streets, laborers unearthed a pile of coins which evidently had been placed in the wall more than a half century ago.

1919
The city will offer a supply of free wood to the needy.  Mountainous heaps of broken wood blocks, reclaimed from torn up pavement, have been assembled at the city material yards.

1979
Forty cars of an empty 86-car gravel train derailed on the Southern Pacific tracks near the 100 block of Probandt Street, blocking traffic on Probandt and Flores streets.  No one was injured and none of the cars overturned in the mishap.
