April 16 in San Antonio history...

Freight cars designed especially for cattle made their first appearance in San Antonio on the tracks of the Southern Pacific.

A 15-year lease of the new hotel at Houston and St. Mary's was signed by L.J. Hart, president, and Lewis Maverick, secretary, San Antonio Hotel Co. and H. H. Franks, of Houston, the leasee.

Smoking by uniformed policemen while on duty is forbidden in a general order issued by Police Chief Owen Kilday today.  Exempted from the order are men on dogwatch from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Jerry Tarkanian is hired as the coach of the San Antonio Spurs to replace interim coach Bob Bass.  Bass would coach the rest of the 1991-1992 season and Tarkanian would coach beginning in the fall of 1992.  His tenure as head coach would only last 20 games.  He was fired after starting with a 9-11 record.
