January 8 in San Antonio history...

1890
Dan O'Leary, the pedestrian, is in the city. A match with a $250 side, has been arranged between him and a soldier at the fort who is a long-distance jogger. O'Leary is to walk ten miles fair heel and toe while the boy in blue runs fifteen.

1920
San Antonio's South Loop was renamed the Mission Road at a meeting at the city hall of South Side property owners, city and county officials and other interested persons.

1960
Brooke Army Medical Center's hospital will be known from now on by its World War II name, Brooke General Hospital. The hospital has been known since 1950 as Brooke Army Hospital.

1961
Leroy "Satchel" Paige appears as part of the halftime entertainment in the basketball game between the Harlem Stars and the New York Rens at Municipal Auditorium.
