January 31 in San Antonio history...

1910
Minnie Scruggs, a local woman, caused much excitement when she sat down in the middle of the track as a Southern Pacific switch engine approached.  The engine was stopped in time.

1920
The national prohibition law [Vollstead Act], which went into effect January 16, bans display of liquor signs on buildings of all sorts.  It is understood the many signs seen in San Antonio are illegal, although they date back to the pre-prohibition era.

1935
A $500,000 remodeling program made the St. Anthony Hotel the only air-conditioned hotel in Texas.
