June 8 in San Antonio history...

1897
All soldiers at Ft. Sam Houston must now wear the regulation uniform whether on duty or off. It calls for white trousers and helmets with blue blouses. One deviation is permission to wear straw hats while off duty.

1929
Construction begins on Sunken Garden Theater.

1933
The Reptile Garden opens at the Witte Museum.

1937
Fire and Police Commissioner Phil Wright yesterday reiterated his stand refusing to allow city fire and policement to unionize. He said they should not be placed in a position where they take orders from any source but the city.
